¿quiÉn SOY?
Welcome. ¡Bienvenidos!
I'm delighted to be teaching Spanish! I believe that proficiency in a second language—particularly Spanish which is spoken by more than 500 million people worldwide—is an essential 21st Century skill, regardless of career choice.
I took my first Spanish class in eighth grade—and I was hooked from the start! I continued with the language in college and spent a year Spain where, among other courses, I took classes at la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. After graduation, I returned to Spain with a fellowship to explore Spanish dance and folklore first-hand by traveling around the country to traditional festivals, learning flamenco and regional dances, and performing with a folklore group. It was a thrilling experience! Not long afterward I found myself back in Madrid to earn my masters in Spanish language and literature—and I continued to perform and travel to festivals.
Upon returning to the USA, I helped plan bilingual, binational special events including for Paloma Picasso, la condesa de Romanones (a countess!), and Nobel laureate Camilo José Cela. I also contributed to and edited a bilingual, binational magazine. This editing experience led me to a career in magazine publishing.
However, later I felt called to the classroom—and I wanted to be able to spend at least a month every year in Spain. So I pursued my teaching certification in Spanish, and I've now taught Spanish to students in grades 5 through 12. My overarching goal as a teacher is to make my passion for the Spanish language and culture contagious to my students so that they really want to become proficient in the language. I also seek to impress upon them that Spanish isn't a "class" but rather a "skill." Plus, I want my students to know that I'm a lifelong language learner: I take ever opportunity I can to continue to expand my knowledge of the Spanish language and culture.
It's an honor and a privilege—and a great joy—to teach Spanish!
