KING Felipe II and his ROBOT
The king of Spain created a robot...in the 16th Century. No kidding. King Felipe II—for whom the Philippines were named—had a vast empire, making him the most powerful person in the world at the time. But his son was dying, so he prayed for a miracle to a local saint—San Diego (for whom the city in California was named). The saint wrought a miracle, and in return, the king created a robot to honor him. Sound too far-fetched to be true? Take a listen to Radiolab's recounting of this story and to see the robot in action, click on the video (below).

The word "Afrocolombianidad" is a noun made from the adjectives "colombiano" and "afro" which comes from "africano" and would be used in a phrase such as "comunidades de afro-descendencia"—ie,, communities of African descent). In "Culturízate Zona Joven,' watch a report on this celebration. Click here.
